WinFX is now .NET Framework 3.0
In a very expected moved, WinFX was rebranded as .NET Framework 3.0.
The change in name will not affect the technologies delivered as part of the .NET Framework and version 3.0 of the framework will still contain the existing .NET Framework 2.0 components (such as ASP.NET, ADO.NET, Windows Forms) with the additional base class libraries and components as well as new developer-focused innovative technologies that were previously part of the WinFX package:
- Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), formerly code-named Avalon; a new user interface subsystem and API based on XML, .NET, and vector graphics, which will make use of 3D computer graphics hardware and Direct3D technologies.
- Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), formerly code-named Indigo; a service-oriented messaging system which allows programs to interoperate locally or remotely similar to web services. Includes support for InfoCard.
- Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) was announced in August 2005, and allows task automation and integrated transactions using workflows.
- Windows CardSpace (WCS) formerly code-named InfoCard is a software component which securely stores digital identities of a person, and provides an unified interface for choosing the identity for a particular transaction, such as logging in to a website.
